Abyei Death Toll Reaches 153

ABYEI – At least 153 people were killed and 30 injured in a drone strike in and around Amiet Market in the Abyei Administrative Area, according to updated casualty figures provided by Yohana Akol Ngor, Abyei’s caretaker information minister, and reported by Radio Tamazuj. Authorities said some people remain missing as assessments continue.

The attack occurred on Monday near Amiet Market, a major trading hub located about 10 kilometers north of Abyei town. The market serves local communities and people displaced by the conflict in Sudan.

Local authorities said emergency responders and officials continue to assess the impact of the attack while accounting for those who remain missing.

According to Ngor, the confirmed death toll stands at 153. He said the figure is based on bodies that have been recovered and buried following the attack.

He said some victims were buried in two mass graves located east and west of the market area, while additional people remain unaccounted for.

Ngor also reported that 30 injured people were receiving medical treatment, with some patients in critical condition.

The dead include Sudanese, South Sudanese and Somali nationals, according to the caretaker information minister.

The United Nations condemned the attacks, saying many civilians, including women and children, were killed or injured.

The organization said the United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA) continues to verify casualty figures and support emergency response efforts in the area.

Medical teams treated wounded survivors following the attack, while humanitarian organizations expressed concern about the impact on civilians and ongoing humanitarian needs.

The attack has drawn regional and international attention as authorities continue casualty verification and impact assessments. Officials said efforts to establish the effects of the incident remain ongoing. radiotamazuj.org, wsls.com

The Abyei region remains disputed between Sudan and South Sudan, and casualty figures could change as verification efforts continue and additional information becomes available.
