Fighting Breaks Out Between Rival SPLA-IO Groups in Northern Unity State

BENTIU, 25 October 2026 — Fighting broke out between rival groups of the Sudan People’s Liberation Army-In Opposition (SPLA-IO) in northern Unity State, raising concerns about security in the area.

The clashes involved supporters of Regina Joseph Kaba and Oyet Nathaniel Pierino, who both claim leadership positions within the opposition movement.

Reports said the fighting took place in Rubkona County after forces loyal to Regina Joseph pursued fighters aligned with Oyet Nathaniel, leading to an exchange of gunfire.

Local and military sources said several fighters were injured during the clashes, while others were captured. The exact number of casualties remains unclear.

The latest violence comes only weeks after similar clashes were reported in Leer County, another area of Unity State where rival SPLM-IO groups have been active.

Leaders from both sides blamed each other for starting the fighting. Each faction said it was responding to attacks from the other side.

The dispute is linked to an ongoing leadership struggle within the SPLM-IO that has continued since the detention of opposition leader Riek Machar in March 2025.

Tensions increased further in August 2026 when rival leaders exchanged suspension orders and each side claimed to be the legitimate leadership of the movement.

Civil society groups have voiced concern that continued fighting could put civilians at risk and increase insecurity in areas already affected by conflict.

Observers say the renewed clashes show that divisions within the SPLM-IO remain unresolved and could continue to affect stability in Unity State if political differences are not settled peacefully.
