TONJ NORTH, WARRAP STATE — At least 72 people have been killed and 38 others injured following a devastating armed attack on Akop Payam in Tonj North County, according to authorities in Warrap State. Warrap officials described the incident as one of the deadliest outbreaks of violence in the area in recent months.
The attack reportedly targeted communities in Akop Payam, leaving scores dead, dozens wounded, and forcing civilians to flee affected villages. Authorities alleged that armed groups from neighboring Mayom County in Unity State participated in the assault.
According to state officials, cattle were raided from the Majak-kou cattle camp, while the markets of Athieng-puol and Rual-malith were burned. Homes and other civilian property were also reportedly destroyed during the violence.
Warrap authorities stated that of the 72 reported deaths, 50 were alleged attackers and 22 were members of the affected community. Those figures have been carried by multiple media outlets citing official state reports but remain independently unverified.
The violence is being linked to ongoing cycles of cattle raiding, retaliatory attacks, and intercommunal tensions along the Warrap-Unity border. Security forces have reportedly been deployed to the area, while efforts are underway to recover stolen cattle and restore stability.
State officials have appealed for urgent humanitarian assistance, warning that many displaced families, particularly women, children, and the elderly, are in need of emergency food, shelter, and medical support.
