After Surprise SPLM Primary Defeat in Mawut County, Ezekiel Lol Gatkuoth Alleges Supporter Intimidation

MAWUT COUNTY, South Sudan – Ezekiel Lol Gatkuoth has alleged that some of his supporters have been subjected to intimidation following his defeat in the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM) primary elections in Mawut County, raising concerns about political tolerance and party unity in the aftermath of the closely watched contest.

Speaking after the announcement of the primary results, Gatkuoth expressed disappointment over the outcome but said his chief concern was the reported treatment of individuals who openly backed his candidacy during the campaign. He claimed that supporters had faced pressure and intimidation because of their political affiliations and participation in the internal party race.

Gatkuoth argued that democratic competition within the SPLM should allow members to exercise their political rights freely and without fear of retaliation. He urged party leaders and local authorities to ensure that all members are treated fairly regardless of which candidate they supported during the primaries.

The former contender said the allegations of intimidation risk undermining confidence in the party’s democratic processes and could discourage grassroots participation if left unaddressed. He called for calm among his supporters and urged them to respond peacefully despite their disappointment with the election outcome.

“We must respect the democratic process while also protecting the rights and freedoms of those who participate in it,” Gatkuoth said, appealing for unity among SPLM members following the competitive primary season.

The SPLM primaries in Mawut County attracted significant attention as party members vied for nominations ahead of future electoral processes. The contest was viewed by many observers as an important measure of local political influence and grassroots support within the county.

Political analysts note that internal party elections often generate intense competition, particularly in areas where political loyalties are deeply rooted. They emphasize that post-election reconciliation is essential to maintaining cohesion and preventing divisions from escalating into broader community tensions.

Gatkuoth called on his supporters to remain committed to peaceful political engagement and to continue pursuing their aspirations through lawful and democratic means. He stressed that political differences should not become a source of conflict within communities.

As of publication, there was no immediate public response from SPLM officials regarding the allegations. The ruling party has consistently emphasized unity, discipline, and adherence to democratic principles during its internal electoral processes.

The developments in Mawut County are likely to draw continued attention as party leaders work to consolidate support and address concerns emerging from the primary elections.
